“The response to our informal poll/survey has been overwhelming. In all of our discussion forums, this is by far the most popular subject. We’ve received hundreds of responses from visitors describing the full gamut of experiences with green vehicles and auto insurance premiums. Some visitors say their rates dropped drastically, while others report substantial increases. The diversity of experiences is interesting to see,” said CIRS spokesman Nathan Ackerman.
Because the concept of “green” vehicles is still fairly novel, the existing research is inconclusive as to how car insurance rates will respond to the purchase of such a vehicle. According to visitors’ posts, some carriers drop the rates for drivers who go green because policyholders who do so tend to be safer drivers in general. On the other hand, green vehicles also often contain complex engines and parts that are expensive to repair when a loss occurs, which could result in rate hikes.
“What our latest discussion forum shows is that the jury is still very much out on how going green will affect drivers’ insurance rates. Until further studies can be done, policyholders interested in buying an eco-friendly vehicle should consult with their agent or other insurance representative before doing so to determine exactly how the vehicle change will alter rates,” advised Mr. Ackerman.
