Medical Group Recommends More Frequent Mammograms To Reduce Breast Cancer Deaths

PRLog (Press Release) – Jul 21, 2011 – The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists issued an update to their breast screening guidelines that they report could reduce the number of deaths caused by breast cancer, especially in young women.

According to the American Association for Critical Illness Insurance some 1.5 million Americans will be diagnosed with cancer this year.  "Breast cancer is the leading cancer among women," explains Association director Jesse Slome "and anything that could help identify cancer earlier will save more lives and we fully support the recommendation."

The new recommendation recommends mammography screenings be offered to women annually beginning at age 40.   The preior guidelines recommended mammograms every one to two years, beginning at age 40, and then annually beginning at age 50.

The recommendation has reignited a debate about the most appropriate ages and frequency for breast cancer screening.   The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists now believes annual testing will save more lives by catching cancers sooner. The association of gynecologists shifted away from its earlier wording suggesting that women “should have screening mammography’’ to a tone that simply advises doctors to offer it to patients.

That recommendation comes in marked contrast to advice issued 20 months ago by the US Preventive Services Task Force, a government-appointed independent panel that created a furor when it stopped recommending routine mammograms for women in their 40s after determining the small benefits of screening at that age might not outweigh the harm from finding abnormalities that turn out to be benign.

The new Association recommendation says deciding to have a mammogram is ultimately up to each woman, saying women 40 and older should be offered the screening annually.  “Our thinking was that 40,000 women in their 40s are diagnosed every year with breast cancer and that 20 percent of these women who are diagnosed will ultimately die from the disease,’’ said Dr. Jennifer Griffin, an obstetrician-gynecologist at the University of Nebraska Medical Center and lead author of the new recommendations.

The American Cancer Society, which explicitly recommends yearly mammograms starting at 40, reports that most of the benefits of screening mammography are achieved by starting at age 50 and continuing to have screening every two years until age 75. That is because breast cancers become more common as women age, which means screening has the potential to save more lives for those in their 60s.

According to data from the critical illness insurance association http://www.criticalillnessinsuranceinfo.org without screening, 30 out of 1,000 US women are expected to die of breast cancer. But that drops to 23 out of 1,000 if women undergo screening every other year from age 50 to 75. Beginning screening every other year at 40 saves one additional life per 1,000 women screened.

Health Insurance UK – Taking the confusion out of choosing Private Medical Insurance

Health Insurance UK (www.healthinsurance.org.uk) is a new comprehensive, impartial, and easy to use online guide to the hundreds of private medical insurance products available in the UK.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

health insurance uk logoPRLog (Press Release) – Jul 13, 2011 – Health Insurance UK (www.healthinsurance.org.uk) is a new comprehensive, impartial, and easy to use online guide to the hundreds of private medical insurance products available in the UK. The new site also includes information about international and expatriate health insurance products and also has a guide to dental insurance products available.
There are literally hundreds of health insurance products on the market and it is often hard and confusing to make the right decision. Health Insurance UK offers consumers a one-stop information centre which will provide them with all they need to know about the vast array of private health and medical insurance products available.
The site contains product profiles on over three hundred private health insurance plans and company profiles on more than one hundred private health insurance and medical insurance companies. To make it even easier to find the right policy among this mind boggling array of medical policies and health plans the content of the policies on offer has been broken down into specific categories, aimed at supplying consumers with as much information they need to make informed choices.
Health Insurance UK does not provide a health insurance and medical insurance cost comparison service. Health insurance plans are complex making it difficult to make straightforward price comparisons.  However, the level of detail on the site about the various plans makes it easier for site visitors to narrow down the type of plan they are looking for.  Quotes can be requested directly from providers or an enquiry can be submitted to up to five providers.
Health Insurance has been launched by Intuition Communication, publishers of some of the UK’s most visited and successful health information sites in the private healthcare sector including Private Healthcare UK, the Harley Street Guide, and Surgery Door.
Keith Pollard, Managing Director of Intuition says: “We have launched this site to cater to the increasing numbers enquiring about the differences between various health and medical insurance schemes. We wanted to offer an easy to use online resource that would help consumers find their way through the private health insurance maze.   This is the first time that all this information has been gathered together in one place, making it easier for consumers to understand what is available and find the right products they need”.

Covington Medical Equipment Firm Splits Up Into Retail, Non-Retail Entities

PRLog (Press Release) – Jul 16, 2011 – Covington, Louisiana-based Durable and Home Medical Equipment provider Egan Medical Equipment has split up into two completely separate companies that operate independently of each other and no longer share a location.

The decision was made in response to sweeping changes to the number and type of items covered by Medicare and in particular HMO, PPO and other insurance providers.

The company was split-up on the basis of primary method of reimbursement, with one of the new entities focusing on retail sales from its Covington, LA storefront, and the other entity focusing on the Medicare and insurance/HMO/PPO reimbursement side of the business.

Egan Medical: Retail Medical Equipment & Supplies

One of the two newly created companies, Egan Medical Equipment and Supply [ Link = http://www.eganmedical.com/ ] is now strictly a retail entity. Egan Medical does business both from its Tyler Street storefront across from St. Tammany Parish Hospital in Covington, as well as on the web at EganMedical.com.

Egan Medical now only accepts credit cards (Visa, Mastercard, AmEx, Discover), debit cards, e-checks and PayPal, as well as cash and checks for in-store purchases. Any patients/customers who call or show up at the store in search of any medical equipment item covered by insurance or Medicare will be referred to Egan DME.

Egan DME: Medicare, Insurance (HMO/PPO)

The other entity, Egan DME, will base its business entirely around products that are covered by most common HMO, PPO, VA, other insurance or Medicare. Any items for which the company will not be reimbursed by the aforementioned payers will be referred to Egan Medical.

While there will be some small degree of overlap in terms of products that both of newly created DME companies will carry, it is not expected to exceed a miniscule percentage of the total number of products offered by each entity. One of the main reasons for this has to do with the fundamental restructuring of Medicare that is taking place as part of the new federal healthcare overhaul. The majority of the products now on Egan Medical's retail medical equipment store shelves were covered by medicare and/or insurance just a few short years ago. However, under the new billing codes, the vast majority of the products are not covered at all by Medicare and most insurance.

Some products like bedside commodes and transport wheelchairs [Link: http://www.transportwheelchairs.net/ ] will be offered by both new entities. Other items such as the soft orthopedic braces will be exclusive to Egan Medical, whereas hospital beds will be offered only by Egan DME.

Egan DME will carry items such as hospital beds, manual and electric wheelchairs, mobility scooters, bedside commodes and other heavy DME equipment.

Egan Medical offers a more extensive selection of medical equipment and medical supplies. Their retail offerings include products such as the following: Mobility Equipment, Bathroom Safety Equipment, Personal Aids, Diabetic Supplies, Soft Orthopedic Braces & Supports, Nursing Supplies, Monitoring Equipment, -1241067585  Compression & Anti-Embolism Stockings, Vitamins & Supplements and many others.

The Medical Equipment Store Blog is a new weblog covering news and developments from the world of medical equipment and devices. The site also offers product reviews and tutorials, as well as reflections written by the manager of a medical equipment/medical supply store.
